Non-consecrated wafers inoculated with Serratia marcescens show the appearance of blood. (A) Purified culture of Serratia marcescens grown on agar plates. (B) Non-consecrated wafers were inoculated with Serratia marcescens and cultured for 24-48 hours on a wet surface. The resemblance to blood is apparent. Samples were examined under visible light (VL) or ultraviolet light (UV). Similar to whole blood, S. marcescens growth does not exhibit fluorescence under UV.
